Established in 1972, Syktyvkar State University (SyktSU) stands as the oldest and largest higher education institution in the Komi Republic. Officially known as Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University, or formerly as State University of Syktyvkar, the university pays homage to Pitirim Sorokin, a distinguished Russian-American sociologist and political activist. Situated in the Komi Republic, it is commonly referred to as Komi State University.

The medical institute within Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University was established in 1996, emerging as the youngest educational entity within SyktSU. Offering a comprehensive MBBS program spanning six years, consisting of five years of academic study followed by one year of general internship, Komi State Medical University also provides specialized training and practical studies across various disciplines, including social work specialists, nurses, doctors, and psychologists.

Syktyvkar State Medical University holds a commendable position among top-ranking institutions, securing the 57th spot nationally, while its global ranking stands at 2442nd.
